At the beginning of 2002 the average age of population was 33.7 (in Russian Federation -–37.8). The average winter temperature is – 16.7°C (the lowest temperature on record was -50°C). The average summer temperature is +19°C (the highest t° was +38°C). In the northern part of the region you can observe the unique natural phenomenon of Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). Moreover you can see the Polar nights that last here 1050 hours per year. ... in many respects our region is unique. To begin with, our province (oblast) is the largest in Russia - 1,435,200 square kilometres, or 8.4% of the total area of the country. And if you take into account that our province is five times as large as Italy, three and a half times Germany, and two and a half times France - worldwide there are only 19 countries larger than the province of Tyumen. Its most northerly point touches the Arctic Ocean (76 30' N), And at its most southerly it borders on Kazakhstan (55 10' N). From north to south Tyumen province stretches 2100 km, and from west to east 1400 km. There are more than 70,000 rivers in Tyumen province and, if one could put them end to end, they would encircle the equator 15 times! Our biggest rivers are Ob and Irtish. The area at the Ob basin is the fifth largest in the world, after the Amazon, Congo, Mississippi and Plate; its length is 3650 km. Our country is the land of hundreds of thousands of lakes; their exact number is unknown even to specialists. Three-quarters of the province's landmass is covered by taiga (sub-arctic thick coniferous forest). Tyumen province has a total population of just over 3 million, with an average of 2.2 inhabitants per sq. km. Tyumen is the most multi-national province in Russia - here people of 125 nationalities live and work. More than 70% of them are Russian, about 8% Ukrainian and about 7% Tatar. From the wells of our province Russia obtains nine-tenths of her gas and two-thirds of her oil supply. We have a pleasant climate: real winter with frost (down to -40 C) and snow, and real summer (up to 35 C). And, on the whole, Tyumen is the sunny city: we have sunshine for 2066 hours in the year. By comparison, Moscow has a quarter fewer hours of sunshine - 1582, and even Kiev has only a total of 1786. If you look carefully at the map of Russia and of Tyumen province, then you'll be bound to agree with the claim that the Tyumen region is the heart of Russia, both in outline, location, and (and without offence to other regions) it significance.
